To protect the city of St. Petersburg from flooding, a storm surge barrier was constructed in 2011, named the St. Petersburg Flood Protection Barrier. The barrier protects the city from storm surges caused by the Baltic Sea storms.

Royal HaskoningDHV conducted comprehensive design studies for the barrier. Its design was especially challenging regarding the wave-induced forcing experienced by the storm surge barrier gates. This is due to the complex wave pattern near the construction caused by refraction, diffraction, and reflection. The shape of the gates results in standing waves travelling along the gates. At the time (2005) such behaviour could only be captured using physical modelling for the design. Nowadays, Royal HaskoningDHV applies a recently developed, state-of-the art Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model called CoastalFOAM for this type of problems. We are looking into application of this model to complex 3D geometries. This project is a perfect validation case to test the 3D capabilities of Coastal FOAM.

What you do as an Intern

We are looking for a motivated intern with an interest in hydraulic engineering and numerical modelling. The assignment is to evaluate the wave-induced forces on the St. Petersburg Flood Protection Barrier using a 3D numerical CoastalFOAM model. The numerical simulations are to be compared to the results of laboratory experiments that have been conducted in St. Petersburg. The measurement data is available for this study.

The aspects of interest are:

  • Wave pattern around the construction (refraction, diffraction, and reflection)
  • Wave-induced forces on the construction
  • Overtopping
  • Create a video to showcase the CoastalFOAM outcomes compared to the small-scale tests!

What you bring

  • A MSc student, having a technical background. For example: Hydraulic Engineering specialization (e.g. Coastal Engineering) or Physics
  • Interested in numerical modelling
  • Experience with Matlab and/or Python
  • Loves a challenge and does not get frustrated when things do not work the first time
  • Likes to be part of a team and prefers the office environment above working from home
  • Be a relatively sociable person who doesn’t mind to sometimes join one of our many social activities

Where you will work

Royal HaskoningDHV is a global company with over 6.000 staff in 140 countries and is active in engineering & design and consultancy. We strive to have a positive impact on people and their environment and on the global economy through the projects we do.

You will become part of the Advisory Group Resilience & Maritime the Netherlands. This team consists of around 180 colleagues and is based in the Netherlands across three offices (Rotterdam, Amersfoort and Nijmegen). As a team we excel in a wide variety of services and skills in the fields of Climate Resilience and Maritime developments. We provide our clients,
both private and (semi)governmental, with a range of services throughout the various phases of a project: from inception, through master planning, feasibility, design all the way to construction supervision. We have a strong foothold in the Netherlands but we operate worldwide.

What we offer

During your internship at Royal HaskoningDHV, you will learn what it is like to work in a consultancy firm and more specific the kind of projects implemented by the advisory group Resilience & Maritime NL. You will be fully part of the team and as such you are invited to participate in all team activities both project related and social activities You will also receive a monthly allowance.

Are you our new intern?

We would like to meet you! Click on the apply button and upload your resume and motivation letter. After receiving your application, we will contact you as soon as possible. The application process then consists of 1-2 interviews. Are we all enthusiastic after this? Then you will receive an offer from us, and we will be happy to welcome you on board!
