Carbon footprint assessment of airport civil engineering design internship

Annually, the aviation industry is responsible for approximately 2% of the worldwide CO2 emissions. The sector targets a cap on net aviation CO2 emissions from 2020 onwards (carbon-neutral growth) and a reduction in net aviation CO2 emissions of 50% by 2050 relative to 2005 levels. These targets force the aviation sector to act and contribute.

Although the majority of the aviation carbon emissions come from aircraft operations, also infrastructural works at airport contribute. Infrastructural works can entail construction of runways, taxiways, or aprons, or rehabilitation of these assets. Currently, there is no tool available to evaluate the carbon footprint of airport civil engineering designs.

Objective

The goal of the graduation internship is to develop a tool to evaluate the carbon footprint of airport infrastructural designs. Existing carbon footprint calculation tools shall be evaluated and developed into a tool tailored for airport projects.
